Honestly the only thing I find worth it to buy now is midi controllers, software synths and high quality percussion samples. The multiple inputs and outputs are also a must on my new one, I use an mainly the USB input from my computer for the CPU benefits but also have the auxiliary input and a Bluetooth adapter input now to play through my monitors (so I can connect my phone!) - having frequency controls is also great for late night when I’m listening to music and I can turn down just the bass for neighbours right on the interface but I wish it had controls for the actual cutoff positions. ![]() the audio interface I got was pretty shitty - it didn’t handle as much audio processing as the interface I have now does which helps lower the CPU load. I think the synth was overkill to start with, but fun to play around with. MicroKorg synth Alesis io2 Studio headphones M-audio trigger finger Ableton launchpad Not force it to try and be something that it’s not. Using a kick from a sample pack? An engineer has sat and processed that already, why pile a ton of shit on it to “make it your own” I now realise that what I really should have done was just go back into the packs and pick a different sample. Also wish that I understood that more often than not, less is more when it comes to FX on a mixer channel. In the long run it has helped my know how to use my VSTs properly, and as time went on my sound design was getting good. Resulting in a lot of wasted time, and poor sounding stuff. I mean to the point that I was forcing myself to make EVERYTHING from scratch. I just wish that I hadn’t been sucked into the whole “using presets is cheating” mindset. In terms of how I started out, I don’t think I’d have done anything much differently purchase wise. My latest purchase was a Novation Ultranova. Ableton, Komplete, bunch of fab filter plugins (proQ, proL, Saturn) my sample library has grown into some humongous folder that some how I know how to navigate. Me and a friend went halves on a bunch of stuff. To begin with I used a cracked copy of FL studio, could have been fl8? Once I realised this was a serious hobby I invested. studio monitors (M-Audio BX8as, still have them 12 years or so on!) -usb interface (m-audio fast track pro) -midi controller (m-audio oxygen 25?) -microphone (shure sm57?) -sample packs But man, the seamless integration with Ableton is sick. NI was such a distraction with a great sounds but such a pain to integrate with Ableton. With my current setup, I’m forced to work with what I have and in doing so, learning Ableton like I should have done before. ![]() It was overkill and too much to learn at once. Originally I got a Push 2 and an NI Maschine MK3. Midi keyboard or analog synth with midi capabilityĪudio interface (I’m using NI Komplete 6)Īdd later: Microphone with condenser, Tascam field recorder, Sampler/drumpler (I’m undecided atm between Akai MPC Live, some Elektron device or ? Now waiting to see what might pop up at super booth and secretly want an acid bass machine that’s not designed like the Old school ones from the 90s. This is what I have atm and would recommend: Sold quite a bit of gear once I figured things out. ![]() I went hog wild at first and learned the hard way.
